Here’s a less than 1 minute overview of the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.
1. Elected as the Vice President to President John F. Kennedy in 1960.
2. Became president when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in November 1963.
3. Won the 1964 Election in a landslide against Republican Barry Goldwater with 61% of the popular vote.
4. Domestic affairs: Put together his “Great Society” legislation which was called “The war on poverty” which included 3 landmark Civil Rights bills and established Medicare.
5. Foreign affairs: Pursued the Vietnam War further which was very unpopular.
6. In 1968 he stunned the Democratic Party and the nation by announcing he would not seek a second term.
